Wiz Khalifa is one of Pittsburgh’s most iconic hometown heroes, and is the only person who could give the brand new Citizens Live at The Wylie a proper introduction. Born in North Dakota but raised right here in the Steel City, Wiz has always kept a tight connection with his roots and local fan base. Welcoming this fresh entertainment hub to the neighbourhood felt like a major milestone for the local music scene, and having a true Yinzer who bleeds black and yellow spearhead the night made the occasion even more special.
Walking into the Wylie for the first time was pure magic. Every inch has been carefully crafted to not only become the new hotspot in Pittsburgh, but also to honour the legacy of the rich music history of the city. The centerpiece of the Wylie is the mirrored piano suspended from the cieling, inspired by the piano that was at the Crawford Grill, a beautiful tribute to its once-upon-a-time neighbour. Black and white photos taken by one of the most known photographers in Pittsburgh history, Charles “Teenie” Harris, line the hallways for all to admire, ensuring those who paved the way are never forgotten. A photobooth lets concertgoers have a special memory of the night to take home. The Vinyl Room gives VIPs an upscale space to relax before, during, and after the show, and the rooftop patio lets everyone have a taste of luxury with a stunning view of the city. The main pit is wide and spacious, allowing everyone to be as near to the stage as possible. Even up on the balcony, every seat has a perfect view. It’s truly spectacular how unique, and uniquely Pittsburgh, the Wylie is.
The vibes were as high as the crowd wheb DJ Bonics took control of the decks to make sure the room was completely warmed up for the night. As Wiz Khalifa’s long-time DJ, Bonics knew exactly what the Pittsburgh audience needed to hear to get moving. He spun a heavy mix of local yinzer favourites, classic hip-hop joints, and current club bangers that had everybody singing along at the top of their lungs.
Stepping into the spotlight right after the opening spin, Florida rapper BossMan Dlow brought a surge that kept the momentum rolling forward. He brought his signature Florida sound with confidence, dropping high-octane tracks that got the pit jumping and shouting. The crowd fed right into his bold stage presence and rowdy cadence, giving him a warm Pittsburgh welcome.
When Wiz finally hit the stage, the entire room erupted into pure chaos, with huge cheers from wall to wall. Fans were bouncing from the front row all the way to the back of the balcony, shouting every lyric back at him while clouding up the Wylie with thick haze. Wiz brought an incredible amount of personal energy to the microphone, running across the stage and constantly engaging with the crowd to keep the spirit high. The collective excitement in the air was buzzing with a hometown connection that was just as strong as it has ever been.
Taking things up a notch, Wiz brought a full live band to elevate his tracks into powerful live arrangements. Very few rappers perform with a live band; the difference is absolutely massive and makes the songs come to life in new ways. The drums and heavy bass added a massive, fuller sound that hit super hard in the chest. Wiz ran through a stack of his greatest hits, giving the long-time Taylor Gang supporters exactly what they came for. Hearing those timeless tracks performed in a brand new venue made the entire set feel like a proper celebration.
Throwing a party of this magnitude turned out to be the ultimate way to welcome Citizens Live at The Wylie to the neighbourhood. Bringing together local pride, top-tier production, and an unforgettable lineup gave the new space an immediate legend status in the city. Wiz performing “Black and Yellow” was the only way to properly christen the Wylie. Nights like this showcase why Pittsburgh’s music community is so passionate, with people from all walks of life uniting for a shared love. The future is looking bright for the music scene in Pittsburgh, and Wiz said it best: “I love my city.”
