Forged in the swampy humidity of New Orleans back in the early nineties and sharpened on stages all across the globe, sludge metal supergroup DOWN made a massive pit stop in Pittsburgh on their Strap It Down tour while gearing up for their highly anticipated fall release, Volume V. The legendary crew brought decades of thick, Sabbath-inspired southern groove back into the spotlight for an audience craving pure heavy riffs. Fans packed Stage AE wall to wall, ready to soak in every second of raw metal energy before the new album drops.
Kicking off the night, Spirit in the Room stepped up with a strangely captivating set that caught plenty of folks off-guard in the best way possible. Their blend of dark rock, aggressive noise, and gothic atmosphere carved out a unique space early in the show. Vocalist Dennis Sanders stalked the stage like a man possessed, throwing every ounce of emotion into the microphone while the riffs kept things tight and hypnotic. People all throughout the crowd were headbanging along as the band built up a wall of sound that felt both dangerous and mesmerizing. They definitely earned themselves a solid crew of new fans by the end of their too-short set.
Taking the stage next, alt-metal icons Helmet dialed the energy up to the absolute maximum with their signature brand of precision-engineered noise. Page Hamilton and company sounded as crisp and brutally punchy as ever, slamming through heavy riffs with staccato precision that had the floor moving continuously. All of their iconoc hits, but especially “Unsung,” caused immediate chaos in the center of the crowd as a massive pit opened up right on cue. The sharp, mathematical crunch of guitars gave a rad contrast to the muddy sludge that was still to come later in the night. Their set was a relentless masterclass in tone and groove, proving beyond a doubt that they still hold down the crown for mid-nineties heavy alternative power.
When DOWN finally stepped out under the lights, the sheer presence of the core lineup instantly set the whole building on fire. Frontman Phil Anselmo dominated the center of the stage with immense charisma, roaring into the mic while holding the entirety of Stage AE in the palm of his hand. Guitarists Pepper Keenan and Kirk Windstein stood tall like twin towers of riffage, trading off infectious southern solos and heavy chugs that rattled teeth. Bassist Pat Bruders laid down an absolute wall of low-end, locking in with Jimmy Bower as he pounded the drum kit with incredible force. They all looked genuinely happy to be on stage making noise together, oozing a brotherhood that you just cannot fake after all these years.
The setlist offered a bit of everything across their rich catalog, giving long-time listeners a taste of every era. The set opened with “Blood Oath,” the first single from the upcoming album Volume V, releasing November 20th, 2026, and it hit hard and heavy with thick chuggy riffs. Classic cuts off NOLA including “Lifer” and “Hail the Leaf” sent wave after wave of energy through the crowd, with voices echoing the choruses at top volume. Anselmo demanded movement and headbanding from their awesome fans, and the crowd came to life with a circle pit taking up most of the floor. They balanced the iconic anthems with deep cuts off Down II and Down III, making sure every album got its moment in the sun. Anselmo dedicated “Ghosts Along the Mississippi” to all the youngsters, happy to have the next generation of metaheads experiencing some of the iconic jams that paved the way. The set ended with the massive “Bury Me in Smoke”, a classic from 1993 that still holds up as one of the best.
Seeing a band of this caliber hit the road again with so much power and passion reminds you why heavy music is such a special community. As the show ended, everyone was talking about how killer DOWN sounded and how much they cannot wait to get their hands on the new album this fall. There was an overwhelming feeling of gratitude that these veteran musicians are still out here doing it at the highest level possible. If this show was any indication of what’s coming next for DOWN, the heavy metal world is in for a massive treat.
