Pittsburgh rock fans had the night of their lives as Alter Bridge rolled into the Roxian with their What Lies Within tour. The Florida-based heavy hitters are currently out on the road celebrating their newest self-titled studio album, which dropped to massive fan acclaim earlier this year. Over the last two decades, Alter Bridge has built a stellar reputation on a foundation of dual-guitar wizardry and sweeping, emotional melodies. Seeing them command an intimate, packed house like the Roxian is exactly why they remain undisputed kings of the genre.

Kicking things off with a heavy dose of country-fried grit, Tim Montana set the stage ablaze. We last saw the rowdy frontman tearing up Pittsburgh two years ago when he opened for Skillet and Seether over at Stage AE. This time around, his hybrid blend of southern rock attitude and metallic distortion got the early crowd at the much more intimate Roxian moving early on. His gritty vocals and blue-collar anthems served as a perfect, high-energy spark to ignite the night. Even those who are very much opposed to all things country couldn’t help but rock out to the heavy, blues-infused jams.

Following that initial blast of rock and roll energy, industrial rock legends FILTER stepped up to turn the Roxian into a beautifully chaotic wall of sound. Richard Patrick led his band through a ferocious, nostalgia-fueled set that had the entire floor pulsing to those classic, gritty electronic beats. Their signature aggressive edge and heavy bass grooves kept the momentum tracking at an absolute premium.

When the house lights finally dropped for the main event, Alter Bridge emerged to a deafening roar and immediately locked into an absolute masterclass of live performance. Frontman Myles Kennedy was in peak form, effortlessly hitting those soaring high notes while trading intricate guitar leads with the riff lord himself, Mark Tremonti. Holding down the low end with an immovable, thumping precision was bassist Brian Marshall, who kept the pocket perfectly grooving all night. Behind the kit, drummer Scott Phillips drove the entire sonic machine forward with a heavy, punishing beat that resonated right through the floorboards.

Digging deep into the music, the setlist perfectly balanced their iconic catalog with a heavy emphasis on the incredible tracks from their new self-titled album. “Silent Divide” kicked off the set and sounded absolutely massive in a live setting. The crist riffs of “What Lies Within” got heads bangs. The catchy hooks of “Tested and Able” had everyone singing along to just as loudly as they would the old classics, which is a rare feat for any veteran band. Watching Kennedy and Tremonti layer their guitars on these new tracks was a true treat for the ears. It wasn’t all heavy riffs and powerhouse anthems, Alter Bridge slowed it down for the beautiful acoustic “Watch Over You,” making the highs feel even higher and the emotion even stronger.

Solidifying their legendary status once again, the die-hard fans showed up in droves to support the band they have followed through thick and thin. This loyal community is the lifeblood of Alter Bridge, and the connection between the stage and the crowd was electric, from the front row all the way to the back balcony. Kennedy was standing on this exact same stage last year opening for Mammoth showing off his solo work, but having the whole brotherhood back together created a totally different level of magic. It was a beautiful reminder that no matter how many side projects these guys crush, the bond of Alter Bridge and their incredible fanbase is something truly sacred.
