High energy and heavy riffs collided in spectacular fashion as the Harajuku-core sensation Hanabie. returned to Pittsburgh for another unforgettable night. The four-piece powerhouse from Tokyo has spent the last few years taking the global metal scene by storm with their unique blend of brutal metalcore and sugary sweet J-pop aesthetics. Formed originally in high school, the band has evolved into a world-class act that balances technical proficiency with a playful, chaotic spirit. The Roxian was the perfect backdrop for this stop on their 2026 North American tour, offering a grand stage for their colourful and high-decibel performance. Fans arrived early and dressed in their best streetwear to welcome back a band that has quickly become a local favourite.

The evening of metalcore mayhem kicked off with a crushing set by Enterprise Earth, who brought a much darker and more technical atmosphere to the stage. Their brand of progressive deathcore was a relentless sonic assault that immediately got the floor moving in a swirling mosh pit. Travis Worland dominated the microphone with a range of guttural growls and piercing screams that showcased why they are leaders in the modern extreme metal scene. The intricate guitar work of Gabe Mangold provided a backdrop of complex melodies and bone-shaking breakdowns that resonated through the entire building. It was a masterclass in precision and aggression, and a great way to get the night started!

Next up were the goblin-metal legends Nekrogoblikon, who transformed the Roxian into a bizarre and hilarious goblin party. Having just headlined the Thunderbird Cafe last year, the group was clearly happy to be back in front of a Pittsburgh crowd that understands their specific brand of melodic death metal. Dickie Allen led the charge with his incredible vocal versatility, while the ever-present John Goblikon danced and joked with the rabid crowd. Their set was a fast-paced journey through catchy hooks and eccentric keyboard lines that kept everyone laughing and headbanging at the same time. The chemistry between the musicians was electric, and they successfully bridged the gap between the technicality of the openers and the fun energy of the headliners.

When the lights finally flashed for Hanabie., the roar from the crowd was deafening as they welcomed the band back to their third appearance at the Roxian. After opening for Jinjer in 2024 and returning to headline last year, Yukina, Matsuri, Hettsu, and Chika felt right at home on this stage. Yukina stalked the front of the platform with a terrifying vocal intensity that defied her small stature, while Matsuri’s guitar work remained flawlessly melodic and heavy. Hettsu provided the thumping low end with her signature bright bass and energetic stage presence, hair flying everywhere, while Chika kept the rhythm section tight with her thunderous drumming, perched high above the stage. They radiated a sense of genuine joy and gratitude for the city, thanking the fans for supporting them throughout their journey.

The set was a rollercoaster of genres that showcased their growth as songwriters and performers. A major highlight was their recently released single “ICONIC,” which blended heavy electronic elements with a massive, anthemic chorus that had the whole room jumping. They moved effortlessly through fan favourites “O•TA•KU Lovely Densetsu” and “Osaki ni Shitsurei Shimasu.,” showcasing that their fusion of heavy metal and pop is so much more than just a gimmick. Every song was a celebration of their Harajuku-core identity, mixing brutal breakdowns with catchy hooks that stuck in the head long after the music stopped.

What made the night truly special was the incredible diversity found within the crowd packed into the theater. People from all walks of life stood side by side, from veteran metalheads in patched denim vests to fans dressed in bright Harajuku fashions and cosplay. There was a beautiful sense of unity in the room as everyone joined together to scream the lyrics and participate in the many circle pits that erupted throughout the set. Despite the different backgrounds and musical tastes, everyone was united by a shared love for good music and the positive energy the band projects. As the final notes of “L.C.G.” rang out, the smiles on the faces of the fans were the proof that Hanabie. has created something truly special that transcends language and culture.
