You would think that two decades later the thrill of hearing your high school jams might have faded, but the energy surging through the Roxian told a completely different story. Boys Like Girls have returned to the spotlight with The Soundtrack of Your Life tour, a massive run that makes it clear their brand of infectious pop rock is as vital as ever. The Boston-bred outfit originally skyrocketed to fame during the height of the MySpace era, defining a generation with their polished melodies and heartfelt lyrics. On this particular night in Pittsburgh, the Roxian was packed nearly to its capacity, with a sea of fans spanning multiple generations. This tour serves as a grand celebration of the band’s enduring legacy, reminding everyone why these songs were the literal backdrop to their formative years.

Arrows in Action took the stage first, and they wasted no time showing why they are one of the most exciting new acts out there right now. They last visited Pittsburgh during the Summer School tour over at Stage AE last year, but the trio seemed totally at home in the more intimate, theater setting of the Roxian. Their set was a total masterclass in modern indie-pop energy, blending crunchy guitar riffs with hooks that stayed stuck in your head long after they walked off. The chemistry between the guys was so obvious as they moved across the stage with a joyful kind of intensity. A ton of people in the front row were already huge followers because they were singing along to every single word and setting a high bar for the rest of the night.

Following that high-energy start, IDKHOW delivered a performance that was just as theatrical as it was musically tight. Led by the super charismatic Dallon Weekes, the bass-heavy grooves kept the nearly sold out crowd completely mesmerized from start to finish. Weekes has this unique ability to command a room with just a look or a clever line, making a big theater feel like a private club. Their set functioned as the perfect bridge, shifting the energy from the modern grit of the openers to the polished anthems everyone was waiting for.

When the lights finally dimmed for the main event, the roar of the crowd was actually deafening as Martin Johnson, John Keefe, Gregory James, and Jamel Hawke emerged from the shadows radiating pure aura. It’s been a minute since Boys Like Girls rocked out in the Burgh, last at Stage AE in 2024 opening for Dashboard Confessional and previously headlining this same Roxian stage back in 2023. Seeing them again felt like a homecoming for the Yinzer fans who have followed them through every single break and reunion. Martin Johnson is still an absolutely captivating frontman, and his vocals sound remarkably unchanged since the band started twenty years ago. The group moved with such a practiced ease, locking into a tight rhythm that only comes from years of shared history on the road.

The whole concept of this tour is a total dream come true for die-hard fans because the band is performing both Love Drunk and their self-titled debut album in their entirety. In a very bold move, they played every single track in the original order, with the first half of the set being Love Drunk and the second half being Boys Like Girls, which let the audience experience the records exactly as they were first heard on a CD or an old iPod. This year marks a huge milestone for the group, Love Drunk celebrates its 17th anniversary and the self-titled Boys Like Girls hits its 20th year of existence. Hearing “Love Drunk” and “The Great Escape” live was a powerful reminder of how much the band dominated the charts during the late 2000s. Each song was delivered with a crisp, punchy sound that honored the original recordings while adding the raw power of a live show.

For a lot of us, these songs are tied to memories of high school hallways, first heartbreaks, and that feeling of pure freedom that only comes from being a carefree teenager. The nostalgia was heavy in the air, but it never felt dated; instead, it felt like a big celebration of a shared history between the band and the fans. Seeing people in their thirties screaming lyrics alongside teenagers proved that the emotional honesty of these records is truly timeless. Boys Like Girls provided a time machine that let everyone in the Roxian feel like a teenager again for one glorious night. And even though “Love Drunk” and “The Great Escape” already had their time to shine, they were both brought back for the encore to close out this incredible night.
