A warm breeze swept over Stage AE as Slightly Stoopid launched their Step Into The Sun Summer Tour in Pittsburgh, marking the official start of their coast-to-coast celebration of good vibes and groovy tunes. Known for their genre-blending sound that fuses reggae, rock, funk, and hip-hop, the San Diego-based group has been riding mellow waves since the mid-90s. This opening night felt like a backyard party with thousands of friends, perfectly timed with the finally-arrived early June weather and that unmistakable first-show energy. The band came ready to set the tone for a summer full of chilled-out rhythms and carefree singalongs.

Little Stranger got things started with their distinct blend of indie hip-hop, drawing the early crowd into a smooth and playful groove. The duo, based in Charleston, South Carolina, kept it fun and exciting in the best way. With clever lyrics, bouncing beats, and undeniable chemistry on stage, they easily won over anyone who hadn’t heard of them before. The addition of a saxophone and trumpet brought a funky layer to the already groovy vibes. They even managed to get a superstar photographer: Spiderman! Their laid-back yet electric energy made it clear that this show was all about fun, flow, and not taking yourself too seriously.

Iration took the middle slot of the night and dialed things up with their signature brand of reggae rock. The Hawaiian-born, California-based band eased into the set with warm guitar lines and slick harmonies, creating a sonic haze that washed over the crowd like saltwater. Their sound was tight and polished, but never stiff, and they kept everyone swaying from start to finish. Their feel-good vibes were impossible to resist, they had arms waving and heads nodding all across the pit and lawn. One of the best aspects of live music, and especially tours with stacked lineups, is you never know what’s gonna happen next, and Iration surprised everyone with the debut of a brand new song, “Say Goodnight,” set to release just a few hours later, a song that features Little Stranger who joined them on stage. The energy was unbelievable, the good vibes of everyone jamming together was contagious and had the whole crowd dancing and just truly enjoying being the very first people to hear the new song.

Slightly Stoopid hit the stage to a roar of cheers, opening not just the set but the entire tour with a sun-drenched sound that immediately brought the crowd to life. The band’s longtime reputation for laid-back mastery was on full display as they seamlessly moved from reggae rhythms and punky grooves to jazzy detours. With everyone constantly swapping instruments like they were passing joints at a bonfire, the chemistry made every transition feel effortless. The crowd responded in kind, lighting up and leaning in for the ride, soaking in each twist in the sound.

The set was a mix of old and new. With a discography spanning 30 years, plenty of nostalgic favourites were dug out. “2am” and “Closer to the Sun” got massive singalongs. And with new music on the horizon, Slightly Stoopid showed off what’s to come, including a track featuring Chali 2na who joined them on stage. Little Stranger also took the stage for the third time of the night, their chemistry with every band immaculate. Slightly Stoopid’s latest release, “Step Into The Sun,” obviously got a special feature, considering the tour is named for it, and rightfully so. It’s the perfect summer song that’s practically begging to be listened to while enjoying a cold drink on a hot day.

The real star of the night was when they honoured the late Mac Miller with a cover of “Ladders.” You could feel the passion dripping from every bar. Mac would be proud. Their sound hit just the right level of loose and locked in, giving off a jam session feel without losing its structure. It felt like they were playing with the crowd instead of just playing at them, and the result was a mellow, immersive trip that wrapped everyone in a blanket of sound and sunshine.

The crowd was incredibly diverse, bringing out all the best of the Burgh. Hippies, cowboys, metalheads, Mario and Luigi, parents showing their young kids music that they grew up with. There’s no typical Slightly Stoopid fan; they come from all walks of life and unite for the love of the music. By the end of the night, everyone could see why Slightly Stoopid continues to pull in such a dedicated fanbase year after year. They’re not just a band, they’re a vibe, and that vibe was strong from the opening note to the final echo. Everyone left grinning, hazy, and ready to follow them all summer long. If this first show was any indication, the Step Into The Sun Summer Tour is going to be one long, sweet ride.
