Known for balancing dramatic flair with heartfelt emotion, Marianas Trench has mastered the art of crafting epic pop-rock anthems that hook listeners with their soaring melodies and intricate compositions. Fronted by the ever-charismatic Josh Ramsay, the Canadian quartet has built a dedicated fanbase through their impressive discography, blending pop-punk, symphonic elements, and dramatic flair. The Force of Nature Tour, in support of their sixth and latest studio album, “Haven,” promised to be a spectacle filled with both heart and grandeur. Fans gathered at the Roxian, eager to experience new material live for the first time, as well as to revisit old favourites that have defined the band’s career.

Opening the night was Piao, a relative newcomer who’s been making waves in the scene since her 2022 debut EP “tissues” and brought a fresh, understated charm to the stage. Piao’s minimalist stage setup and introspective songs created an intimate atmosphere, with her smooth vocals and emotional lyrics drawing the audience in from the first note. Tracks like “Haunted By Potential” and “flip phone” showcased her versatility, from poppy and upbeat to hauntingly beautiful. Though Piao’s set was more subdued compared to the high-energy acts that followed, her quiet confidence and emotional depth left a lasting impression, offering a calm before the storm.

Next on stage was Cassadee Pope, whose country-rock roots blended seamlessly with the night’s pop-rock lineup. The former – and first female – winner of The Voice brought an infectious energy to her set, captivating the crowd with her powerful vocals and relatable lyrics. Rounding out the performance were Jason Brooks on guitar and Jess Bowen (of The Summer Set) on drums, both of whom brought an incredible energy. The set featured a mix of her older work with pop-rock band Hey Monday as well as several tracks from her latest album, “Hereditary.” And for a little bit of fun, Cassadee included a brief yet incredibly powerful snippet from Wicked’s “Defying Gravity” that left absolutely everyone stunned. Cassadee’s stage presence was undeniable, moving effortlessly between heartfelt ballads and uptempo rockers. Her ability to connect with the audience made her set feel like a conversation, and by the time she finished, the energy in the room was palpable.

As Marianas Trench took the stage, the crowd erupted with excitement. Opening with “A Normal Life,” the lead single from “Haven,” the band immediately set the tone for the evening, delivering their signature mix of emotional intensity and grand, cinematic production. Ramsay’s vocals were as flawless as ever, soaring effortlessly through the complex arrangements, while the rest of the band played with tight precision. The visual production, complete with intricate lighting and thematic, stormy backdrop, added an extra layer of drama to the performance, making every moment feel like part of a larger narrative. The audience, fully immersed in the spectacle, sang along to every word, creating an electric atmosphere.

The band didn’t just stick to the new material, though. Fans were treated to a mix of songs from across their discography, including crowd favourites like “Fallout” and “Stutter.” Each track was delivered with a renewed energy, as if the band was performing them for the first time. One of the highlights of the night came during “Nights Like These,” when Ramsay hopped down from the stage and made his way into the crowd, giving an up-close and personal performance to fans. The balance between high-energy anthems and deeply personal ballads showcased Marianas Trench’s range and ability to connect with their audience on multiple levels. The evening felt like a celebration, not just of their new album but of their entire career.

As the night drew to a close, Marianas Trench finished their set with a powerful performance of “Haven,” the title track of the latest album, leaving the crowd both exhilarated and emotionally spent. Ramsay’s theatrical delivery and the band’s tight musicianship had taken the audience on a journey, from the upbeat highs to the emotionally charged lows. The band’s ability to maintain such intensity throughout their set was a testament to their professionalism and passion for their craft. Fans were left buzzing, fully satisfied with a night that balanced epic production with intimate, emotional moments. Marianas Trench proved once again why they remain one of the most exciting acts in modern pop-rock, delivering a show that was as theatrical as it was heartfelt. Their ability to balance spectacle with genuine emotion ensures that their fans will continue to follow them wherever their musical journey takes them next.
