Summer is in full swing, but class was in session as the idobi Radio Summer School Tour made its way to Stage AE, marking a memorable evening for fans of emerging music. This show is not just another summer concert series; it’s a revolutionary platform for emerging bands to connect with larger audiences nationwide. Conceived by industry veterans Eric Tobin (Hopeless Records), Michael Kaminsky (KMGMT), and Kevin Lyman (Warped Tour), the tour aims to spotlight the next generation of headliners while promoting inclusivity and community within the music scene. This inaugural run brought together some of the most exciting up-and-coming artists. Each performance throughout the night truly highlighted the festival’s commitment to diversity, culture, and positivity, creating an unforgettable experience for all attendees.

Letdown kicked off the evening with a high-energy set that immediately captivated the crowd. Their performance featured the brand-new single “Raincoat,” which had just been released earlier that day. The band’s raw emotion and engaging stage presence set the tone for the night, as they played a mix of fan favourites and new tracks. Dark and moody lights brought the emotion behind the music alive. The energy in the room was electric, proving that Letdown is a force to be reckoned with in the music scene. As their set concluded, it was clear that Letdown’s live performances are certainly no letdown.

Honey Revenge followed, bringing a blend of pop-punk and alt rock that had the audience singing and jumping from the very start. Their performance was both polished and passionate, showcasing their musical versatility and stage charisma. The band’s close bonds, tight musicianship, and catchy melodies were a highlight, with each song building on the momentum of the last. By the end of their set, they had solidified their place as one of the standout acts of the night.

Stand Atlantic’s performance was nothing short of explosive. Despite a minor slip-up where vocalist Bonnie Fraser mistakenly referred to Pittsburgh as Philadelphia, an unforgivable crime in the eyes of yinzers, the band quickly recovered and won the crowd over with their charm and humor. Their set included a special performance of “GIRL$,” a track from their upcoming album, dedicated to the women in the audience, and a playful “pit of kindness” where fans slow danced with strangers. The highlight, however, was a surprise engagement in the crowd during a love song, which added a heartwarming touch to the night. Of course there were technical issues immediately after said proposal, but that just gave Fraser time to banter with the lovely couple, Morgan and Megan. Stand Atlantic’s infectious energy and crowd interaction made for a completely unforgettable set.

The Home Team took the stage next, delivering a performance that was both powerful and polished. Promoting their new album, “The Crucible of Life,” the band played with a ferocity that had the crowd moving from start to finish. Lead singer Brian Butcher’s call to “promise me you won’t be afraid to get loud” was met with enthusiastic cheers, and the crowd responded by singing and dancing along to every song. Moody lighting and smokiness added to the ambiance and helped bring the music to life. The Home Team’s blend of melodic hooks and heavy riffs created a dynamic and engaging performance that left a lasting impression. The icing on the cake was Butcher declaring that Pittsburgh gets an A+!

Magnolia Park brought a unique mix of pop-punk and heavy rock to the stage, captivating the audience with their energetic performance. The band’s set was marked by constant jumping, a conga line circling the pit, and an unreleased song called “The Void.” Their love for Pittsburgh was evident, with the band reminiscing about their previous visits and their favourite local spot, the Burgatory right down the road from Stage AE. Magnolia Park’s ability to blend fun and intensity made their performance a standout, keeping the energy levels high throughout their set.

Scene Queen closed the night with a performance that was both theatrical and heartfelt with her signature Bimbocore style. Known for her flamboyant flair and heavy sound, Scene Queen had the crowd jumping, screaming, and yeeing and hawing in their cowboy hats, while also delivering deeply personal moments. The set was filled with new tracks from her recently released album, “Hot Singles In Your Area.” Between songs Scene Queen talked about her rapid rise in popularity and the journey that brought her to this point, up to writing and releasing the latest album which has themes of the importance of being independent and doing shit for yourself all wrapped up in her hyperpop metalcore style. Her partner Joey Fleming of In Her Own Words joined her on stage for “Barbie & Ken,” adding an extra layer of sentimentality to the performance. Fleming took time out of his own career to sling merch on the tour just to hang out with his beloved partner – peak relationship goals! There’s no other way to put it, Scene Queen’s set was ✨️iconic✨️.

Throughout the night, the camaraderie among the bands was evident, with members of different acts joining each other on stage for guest spots. This collaborative spirit highlighted the supportive nature of the idobi Radio Summer School Tour, creating a sense of community among the performers and the fans. The spontaneous collabs added an element of surprise and delight to the evening, as you’d never know who was going to come running out for a verse, showcasing the versatility and talent of each artist.

The atmosphere at the show was welcoming and safe, a testament to the tour’s commitment to inclusivity and positivity. Scene Queen’s intervention for the injured fan was a prime example of the care and attention given to the audience’s well-being. An abundance of pride flags and the supportive comments from the artists ensured everyone felt valued and accepted. The tour’s emphasis on LGBTQIA+ support was a defining feature of the evening. Each band either identified as part of the community or expressed strong allyship, creating an environment of acceptance and celebration. This progressive stance was a unifying theme, reinforcing the tour’s mission to promote inclusivity and diversity within the music scene. Scene Queen’s advocacy for LGBTQIA+ rights and her powerful statement, “Pride month should be every month. Love whoever you’re gonna love, especially if it annoys conservative-ass politicians,” really encompassed the passion of the night.

As the night drew to a close, the sense of unity and community fostered by the idobi Radio Summer School Tour was undeniable. The performances were electric, the atmosphere was inclusive, and the connections made were genuine. This tour not only showcased the incredible talent of emerging artists but also highlighted the importance of creating safe, welcoming spaces for fans to enjoy music. The idobi Radio Summer School Tour is the new standard for what a music festival can be, leaving fans eagerly anticipating what the future holds for these shining stars.
