Former emo kids all gathered together at Stage AE as The Used brought their signature blend of post-hardcore and emo rock to Pittsburgh. Since their debut album in 2002, the band quickly rose to prominence with their emotionally charged lyrics and energetic live shows. With hits like “The Taste of Ink” and “I Caught Fire,” The Used have become icons in the alternative music scene. Their latest tour, supporting their recently released album “MEDZ,” promised a mix of classic anthems and fresh tracks, and the Pittsburgh show did not disappoint.

The evening began with a captivating performance by Amira Elfeky. Her hauntingly soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics immediately drew in the crowd. Amira’s stage presence was both humble and powerful, effortlessly connecting with the audience. Her set was a blend of introspective ballads and upbeat tunes, showcasing her versatility as an artist. With a powerful and energetic band backing her, the entire set was the perfect appetizer for the night.

Story of the Year took the stage next, bringing a surge of energy that was palpable. This tour holds special significance as their very first tour was opening for The Used back in 2003, marking a full-circle moment for the band. They last visited Pittsburgh in January for a headlining show, and their return to a bigger stage was eagerly anticipated. Story of the Year’s set was a high-octane mix of old favourites and newer material, including several tracks from their 2023 album “Tear Me to Pieces,” delivered with the same intensity that has defined their career. The crowd was on their feet, singing along to every word, and the band’s dynamic stage presence kept the energy levels soaring. Both figuratively and literally, with lots of gravity-defying leaps.

Story of the Year brought a whirlwind of emotion and intensity, punctuated by their signature stage antics and heartfelt interactions with the audience. While bassist Adam Russell was very much missed, Jason Milbank of Senses Fail filled in and brought along so much passion and energy and fit in perfectly with the rest of the SOTY boys. The set highlighted their enduring passion for live music and their deep connection with fans. The band’s gratitude for the support was clear, making their set not just a performance, but a celebration of their journey and the fans who have been with them from the start as well as those who joined along the way.

When The Used took the stage, the energy in the venue reached a fever pitch. Opening with “Pretty Handsome Awkward,” they immediately got the crowd jumping and screaming as if everyone was still in their prime emo days. The band played a seamless mix of new songs and beloved classics, ensuring that both longtime fans and newcomers had something to enjoy. Bert McCracken’s powerful vocals and cheeky, charismatic stage presence were front and center, drawing the crowd into each song with an intensity that only The Used can deliver.

One of the most endearing aspects of the night was the presence of numerous young fans, a testament to The Used’s multi-generational appeal. This included a very special birthday girl, 10 Year old Aubrey, who McCracken brought up on stage for a proper birthday celebration. Parents who grew up with the band’s music brought their children, creating a unique and heartwarming atmosphere. Seeing kids singing along to songs that shaped their parents’ youth added a special layer to the evening, truly highlighting the timeless nature of The Used’s music.

The Used’s set was punctuated by moments of raw emotion and high energy, from the anthemic “Take It Away” to the absolutely iconic “The Taste of Ink.” The new tracks from “MEDZ,” especially the title track, were met with enthusiastic approval, blending seamlessly with the older hits. The Used’s ability to evolve while staying true to their roots was on full display, showcasing their musical versatility and enduring relevance.

The Used’s show was a masterful blend of nostalgia and new beginnings. With stellar support from Amira Elfeky and Story of the Year, the night was a celebration of music’s power to connect generations and evoke deep emotions. As the final notes faded and the crowd cheered for more, it was clear that this show would be remembered as a highlight of The Used’s tour. Fans left Stage AE with hearts full and spirits lifted, eager to see what the future holds for these iconic artists.
