It was a night of legendary heavy metal as Judas Priest returned to the States once again, bringing their Invincible Shield tour to the stage with a thunderous roar. With a career spanning over five decades, Judas Priest has solidified their place as one of the most influential bands in the genre, known for their electrifying performances and iconic hits. Founded in 1969, the British band has continually pushed the boundaries of metal music, shaping its evolution with each album release. The Covelli Center in Youngstown, Ohio was packed in tight as every metalhead young and old wanted a chance to witness the gods of metal.

Kicking off the night was Sabaton, celebrating their 25th anniversary in grand style. This marks a long-awaited reunion with Judas Priest after their last tour together in 2021 was cut short due to a medical emergency with Judas Priest’s Ritchie Faulkner. The Swedish power metal band delivered a high-octane performance, showcasing their signature blend of historical lyricism and intense instrumentals. With the return of former guitarist Thobbe Englund, Sabaton’s lineup felt both revitalized and nostalgic, as they tore through the legendary songs they’ve become known for and newer tracks from their 2022 album The War to End All Wars, igniting fans with their infectious energy.

Sabaton’s set was a whirlwind of anthemic choruses and blistering guitar solos, transporting the audience through epic tales of warfare and heroism. From the mandatory English “Swedish Pagens” to the iconic Swedish “Carolus Rex,” the set was a masterclass of the absolute best of Swedish heavy metal. Frontman Joakim Brodén’s commanding presence absolutely dominated the stage, doubly so once the powerhouse vocalist donned his now-signature Hello Kitty guitar for “Resist and Bite.” With fan-favourite “Primo Victoria” and “The Last Stand,” Sabaton’s setlist was a masterclass in power metal, leaving the crowd exhilarated and primed for the main event.

As the lights dimmed and the familiar intro of “War Pigs” filled the air, Judas Priest took the stage amidst a deafening roar of applause. Frontman Rob Halford, known affectionately as the Metal God, commanded the audience’s attention from the very first note, his powerful vocals cutting through the air with razor-sharp precision. At 72 years old, Halford has aged like fine wine, with both his voice and showmanship perfecting over the years.

With guitarists Richie Faulkner and Andy Sneap leading the charge, backed by Ian Hill’s thunderous bass and Scott Travis’ relentless drumming, Judas Priest unleashed a sonic onslaught that was nothing short of awe-inspiring. While very much missed, a clip of Glenn Tipton made a brief cameo on the projectors, to the sounds of roaring cheers.

Drawing from their extensive catalogue, Judas Priest delivered a setlist that spanned their illustrious career, from classic hits like “Breaking the Law” and “Painkiller” to newer tracks from their latest album, Invincible Shield. Every track from the new album perfectly blended with the rest of Judas Priest’s extensive discography, especially the anthemic “Panic Attack” and passionate “Crown of Horns.” Each and every song was executed with precision and intensity, showcasing the band’s unparalleled musicianship and enduring legacy.

Throughout their performance, Judas Priest maintained an electrifying energy that never wavered, keeping the crowd enraptured until the very last note faded into the night. With their unmistakable sound and larger-than-life stage presence, they proved once again why they are hailed as titans of heavy metal. As the final chords of “Living After Midnight” echoed through the venue, it was clear that Judas Priest’s legacy is truly invincible.

The Invincible Shield tour was a triumphant celebration of metal music, showcasing two powerhouse bands at the height of their powers. From Sabaton’s exhilarating ferocity to Judas Priest’s electrifying, iconic masterpieces, the night was a testament to the enduring power of heavy metal and the unwavering dedication of its fans.
