tl:dr This is the song that will play when Ragnarök comes, when Fenrir finally seeks his revenge and fulfills his destiny
German metal band Feuerschwanz recently released the first single from their upcoming album Fegefeuer. The song, Bastard Von Asgard, is in German, as is standard for Feuerschwanz. Featuring Fabienne Erni of Eluveite, the vocals are both smooth and incredibly powerful. Combined with its catchy chorus, this song is a very strong start to the new album.
Despite not knowing German, it’s clear that the song is telling the story of Fenrir. In Norse mythology, Fenrir is the son of Loki and is depicted as a monstrous wolf. Though in the beginning, he lived peacefully amongst the gods. However, a prophecy fortold that the children of Loki would eventually lead to the destruction of the gods. The gods, fearing Fenrir’s strength, bound him to a large stone on an island to imprison him, though in the process, Fenrir bit off the hand of Tyr, the god of war. It is here that Fenrir will remain until Ragnarök, a series of events that ultimately will lead to the end of the world, when he will finally be large enough to break free of his bonds and achieve the fortold prophecy of killing Odin, only to meet his demise by Odin’s son. This is the story of Fenrir. This is the story Feuerschwanz’s Bastard Von Asgard, or Bastard of Asgard, is telling.
Feuerschwanz’s album, Fegefeuer (which appropriately translates to ‘purgatory’) releases July 7th.
